summary
The translation of this interview consists of extracts only.
Timiana echoes other narrators in that she associates looking after the forest’s welfare with showing respect for past generations and ensuring the wellbeing of future ones. She has had three cargos (mandatory unpaid community positions), from which she derived much satisfaction: “Yes, happy, we were happy when we had a job . . . In the cargos that we’ve had, we’ve helped the village. I’m grateful to the village for giving us those jobs.” As an elderly woman living on her own, Timiana continues to perform seemingly strenuous chores as a matter of necessity, including collecting firewood and occasionally repairing the stone wall on her land. She describes the journey she used to take to collect limestone, which is now sold in her own village.
