Section 1 |
Works in a wastewater plant in Bystrzyca. Talks about his surprise when the flood came, and how they did not expect it.

Felt “responsible for” his family and tried to remain calm as the water level rose. Felt disbelief that the house could just “disappear” and at the degree of destruction.

Remembers how people initially tried to forget former conflicts and help each other. He worked for the anti-flood committee in Bystrzyca, organising first aid and material assistance.

Talks about the reconstruction of his house and the loan he took out to cover it. His children attended therapy sessions and so now cope well.

Section 5 |
Their new house is located further from the river and higher. Notes how “jealous” people became at the way assistance was distributed. He witnessed “a very few unpleasant situations when a supply of clothes arrived”.

Section 6-7 |
Some people were disappointed with the levels of assistance, although he personally thought that it “was quite sufficient and satisfactory”. Mentions how much he lost when his house was destroyed: “it was part of my life … I am afraid, I will feel the pain till the end of my life”. Sheds tears as he looks back at pictures of his family building the house
